Dr. Dean was murdered on the night of August 13, 1918 after he asked earlier that day to speak to a Department of Justice agent about signal lights he saw from Mount Monadnock. It was thought there were German spies on the mountain signaling boats in the Atlantic Ocean about troop movements from Fort Devens to Boston Harbor sixty miles away. It looked as though he was murdered to keep him from giving information to The Department of Justice until his good friend and prominent man from the village showed up as his body was discovered in a well with a black eye.
