Love is in the Air CoverBlurb:

Sophie Grant made a promise to her friend. She will travel more and work less. She loves the comfort of her book store and has no desire what-so-ever to go on an adventure—not when she can read about them every day in a book.
But a promise is a promise.

After sticking a pin in a map she heads off to the Colorado Rockies.
High in the Colorado Rockies, world renowned photographer Jonas Hansen is healing from a personal loss. Will Sophie’s kind nature, love of photography, and beautiful smile make Jonas whole again?

Excerpt:
Sophie climbed the stairs and Jonas held the door open for her. He didn’t leave a lot of room to get by and she could feel his breath across her neck as their bodies brushed. He removed the pack from her shoulder after she stepped inside and one of the straps snapped.
“That’s a new backpack. I can’t believe that just happened.” At first, Sophie felt embarrassed, and then mad that her pack didn’t even last a day before something broke.
He laughed and pointed to a picnic-bench-style table. “Don’t worry. I can fix it. Have a seat. Would you like a cup of coffee?”
Sophie took a deep breath and replied, “I’d love a cup. Heavy on the cream please.” She sat and zipped her pocket before she removed her coat. Sophie didn’t want any of her precious feathers to float away.
“That’s how I drink my coffee, but I only have the powdered stuff. Is that all right?” Jonas asked as he laid her pack on the table.
“Sure. I’m not picky. I usually drink it out of my secondhand Mr. Coffee machine.” Sophie had a hard time keeping her eyes off of Jonas. He took off his jacket and his large shoulders pulled at the fabric of his shirt, emphasizing the muscles in his back and arms. Talk about being unprofessional. She needed to stop ogling his body. To distract herself, she looked around the building. The interior reminded Sophie of a miniature ski lodge, except hiking poles and backpacks hung on the walls instead of skis and goggles.
“Here you go. The coffee is hot, but not necessarily good.” His hand brushed hers as he pulled away.
“I’ll take it hot over good any day.” Too late, she realized how that might’ve sounded. The heat rose in her cheeks as she clarified, “I meant I like my coffee served hot.”

 Bio:

Sharon Kleve was born and raised in Washington and currently lives on the Olympic Peninsula with her husband.
Sharon is a writer of paranormal and contemporary romance. She loves romance. She loves reading romance, living romance, and especially loves writing about romance. She gets no greater feeling than watching her characters come alive in each other’s arms. Most of all, she loves giving her characters the happily ever after they deserve—with a few bumps and bruises along the way.
One of her favorite things to do is picking up a new book and sinking into the story, immersing herself in the emotions between the characters. She hopes to inspire her readers the same way her favorite authors have inspired her.
When not writing, she can usually be found either curled up in her recliner with her cat and a good book, or in the kitchen baking sourdough bread or bagels.

The (Important) Truth Behind Book Reviews

Want to hear a writer cry, scream, wail, and sometimes even beg? Tell them that they need to get book reviews…

Now, I’m not one who likes to cause authors pain. Far from it. In fact, I would like to tell every writer out there that their book has sold 10,000 copies in a week and that Hollywood has called. However…

There are steps that must be taken in order for this dream to even approach reality. One of the first steps in the marathon of making a book a success is getting reviews.

Book Reviews

Why are reviews important?

There are many reasons to get great reviews. The top four reasons to get reviews are: to let readers know that you are a professional author, for most legitimate advertising sites you must have over a 4 Star review average and at least 10-50 reviews (that’s right… fifty), if you want publishers to pay attention to you (they read your reviews) you need to show that you are passionate about your book… your passion shows, and most importantly in the case of retailers, the more reviews a book has, the more clout it is given in the search ranking.

What does search ranking clout mean?

It means that if your book is titled close to/the same as another and your book has two reviews and the other has two hundred your book will be the last that potential readers will see. Readers and buyers are less likely to scroll down the list to see the other books… and are far less likely to buy a book with only two reviews versus a book with two hundred—regardless of which book is better written/more enjoyable. Basically, unless you have hand sold/pocket sold a book, without reviews you are taking your book off the shelf for potential readers.

How do we get book reviews?

There are many ways to get reviews.

1. One of the most effective is to approach your readers is through your email/mailing list (which should be set up on your website/blog). This list should be your core group of readers—those devoted fans who will check out every one of your new releases and backlist stories.

*For many new authors, your mailing list/Street Team lists may be minimal or non-existent.  If that is the case, you need to first make said list and then take the next step in soliciting reviews.

2. Get in touch with other authors. Most authors are in the same conundrum about the need for reviews. Offer to swap reviews.

*Please note that if you are a publisher/editor or someone involved with publishing in any way, you are ineligible to swap/write reviews.

3. Use a company to find reviewers.

There are some fabulous blog tour companies out there whose main job is to find you reviewers/promotional events. This is a great way not only to market your book but to find those necessary reviews. This does cost money, but this is an investment in your book. If you are not willing to invest time/money in your book then why should a publisher?

There are also large review companies. These are expensive, but they offer a platform where all professional book readers can come and check out your book. That means all major book reviewers (think New York Times) as well as all libraries come together to look over new releases

Now that you know the importance of book reviews, I wish you the best in getting them. May they all be five stars!

Happy Writing,

Danica Winters

Free Today! The Bodyguard by Julie Kavanagh

 by Julie KavanaghThe Bodyguard

Gwen is a self-absorbed renowned Romance Writer and likes things her way, all the time. Rob, a security specialist, has been assigned to look after her for a weekend when both her agent and PA have other places to be.  Both of them think they are right when it comes to what Gwen should so and where she should go. Unfortunately, only one of them can win the battles between them.

When I started to write ‘The Bodyguard’, I wanted Gwen to be a gentle, naïve woman but she had ideas of her own. She turned out to be self-obsessed, sometimes cruel and determined to get her own way in everything.

I started to wonder how someone who excelled at writing romance could be so unromantic and if the very handsome Rob could actually fall in love with her.

But Rob saw something in her from the start and I decided to let him lead the way. He noticed things about Gwen which he liked and made him feel very protective toward her.  He noticed how defensive she was and began to realise how her fierce manner and self-absorbency were the way she hid her soft side from the world. Could he uncover the real Gwen underneath the layers of cold emotions she used to protect herself from the world?

I won’t reveal the ending, although my personal love of happy endings hasn’t been denied, but I just loved how the ever calm Rob gets under Gwen’s many prickly layers and countermands everything she tries to get rid of him.

I loved writing this story although I knew where I wanted these two people to end up. I just didn’t know how they were going to do it. I like to think Gwen Lancaster would have been proud of this romance.

An extract from The Bodyguard:-

“Do you want to get married?”

“To you?” Gwen’s head shot up. Why was he asking her to marry him? In her current state of mind, it didn’t seem such a bad idea. He was kind and caring, had a strong loving family behind him and a lovely home to live in. Wasn’t that everything she’d ever dreamed of?

“To Jeremy Winters, aren’t you meant to be engaged or something?”

Gwen dropped her eyes, a hot flush crossing her cheeks. He hadn’t been asking her, only asking if she was to marry Jeremy. How embarrassing would it have been if she’d said yes?

“Jeremy isn’t the marrying kind.”

“He must be mad, you’re beautiful.”

The hot flush rushed across her cheeks again. She looked up into his eyes.

“You don’t have to say that,” she frowned, not understanding the earnest look he gave in return.

“No, I don’t have to say it but I want to. Tu sei la donna piu bella del mondo ed io voglio spendere il resto della mia vita con te. ”

“What does that mean?”

“It means you are the most beautiful woman in the world and I could spend the rest of my life looking at you.”

Gwen stood, not willing to listen to anything else. She’d never liked being the butt of anyone’s jokes.

“I’m going home now. Give me my keys. I can drive my own car.” Gwen swayed a little, grabbing hold on the edge of the wooden table as the room lurched around her.

“Whoa.” Rob leapt up and immediately regretted it. The last batch of Luigi’s homemade brew was more lethal than usual. “Look, I’m sorry. I seem to be constantly putting my big foot right in it.  Please don’t be angry at me for saying that you’re beautiful. I just said what I thought, but I don’t want you to take it the wrong way. I promised you’d be safe here and you are, even from me and my stupid mouth.”

Gwen stared at Rob’s mouth, she couldn’t help herself and she didn’t think it looked stupid at all. It looked firm and determined, and yet soft and oh so tempting all at the same time.

“I promised Mrs. Devereaux that I wouldn’t leave you on your own but neither of us can drive. So, let’s make a deal, we both stay here and we can go back in the morning.”

“Stay here … with you?” What was he suggesting? Gwen didn’t know whether to be offended or excited.

Have a read of The Bodyguard and let me know what you think. You  can contact me at my Facebook page or better still leave me a review on Amazon, I’m looking forward to reading them.

Blog Tour: For the Love of Our Furry Friends

Writing a Series

by Jennifer Conner

For the love of our Furry friends Christmas blog tourWriting a series can be just as much fun for the readers as it is for the writers. As a reader, I love books that don’t end when you turn the last page. My favorites often continue with the same characters. My hands down favorites are Clarie and Jamie from the Outlander books or Eve and Roarke from Nora Roberts, In Death Series. Both are married couples who argue, make BIG mistakes and are madly in love after MANY books. Just how it should be 

I may not start with the concept of making a story a series, but as I write, I start to think of story lines with brothers, sisters, or best-friends who are introduced. What is their story? Is it worth telling?

Sometimes my stories are stand-alone with the tread being a concept. With my Dog Tails series the characters in the various stories are not related, but have a common thread, they are all dog owners. Book one, Central Bark at Christmas addresses abandoned pets and shelters, Book two, Christmas Gift that Keeps Wagging, covers trained seizure dogs and a single dad with a special needs little boy. Book three, Dog Tags, will be an Army man with a dog he is trying to get home that he rescues in Afghanistan.

But in my Regimental Heroes series, they are all friends who suffer from PTSD in Victorian England. Best-friends, and then his brother and another friend with dyslexia. All brought together by the common thread of war and the era that does not understand what they are going through.

Some stories work tied together, some don’t.

What do you like to read? Stand-alone stories or if you enjoy it, do you want it to go on and on like I do?

Halos Wish1Book Title: Halo’s Wish (Book one in the Dreams Come True Series)

Author: Sharon Kleve

Publisher: Books to Go Now

Genre: Contemporary Christmas Romance

Release Date: 9.13.2013

Length: 50 pages

Heat Rating: Sweet

Book Blurb:

Halo Ann Carlyle wishes for a home, family, and a boat-load of pets. What she gets is a bruised hip, a lump on the head, a broken ankle, and her new yellow Honda Civic is demolished.

Rich McFarland, a sexy veterinarian, keeps showing up in the most unexpected places, promising everything she’s ever wanted.

Halo believes she only has time to pursue her career as a pet detective and must ignore her growing attraction to achieve her dreams.

Will Halo trust her heart, and find a way to get both for Christmas?

Excerpt:

She’d just placed another call through to Pemsky’s office, which went straight to his voicemail, when the office door opened. Halo smiled and looked up into dreamy, gold-flecked green eyes, short sandy brown hair, a slight cleft chin, and full lips set in a hard line. Even with the stern look he had on his face, my hormones jumped into overdrive.

Mr. Dreamy cleared his throat—she must’ve been staring. In her most professional voice she said, “Good morning. How may I help you?”

He removed a piece of paper from his shirt pocket and unfolded the sheet.

“I was parked in front of the Beacon Hill Ale House and my driver’s side mirror was sideswiped by one of Pemsky’s Security’s SUV’s Friday night.”

Halo loved the Beacon Hill Ale House. Every Saturday night the Ale House allowed local bands to jam together. That’s where she’d met her last loser boyfriend. She’d had a lot of loser boyfriends. She’s currently on a hiatus from dating, but she wouldn’t mind jumping back into the dating game for this dream-boat.

He handed her the piece of paper.

“I wasn’t able to get a look at the driver, but I got the license plate number of the vehicle that hit my car and drove away.”

He emphasized the last part.

“I’m very sorry about your car. I’m sure Mr. Pemsky will be happy to cover the damage.” Halo checked the company log and Pemsky’s name popped up as the driver—she gulped.

Length: 50 pages

The festivities’ Brenda once cherished became something she dreaded under the shadow of her parents death. She lived in fear of something happening to the people she loved during Christmas.

Christmas approaches and Brenda has to decide if she’s going to let the past hold her prisoner for another year or if she can finally enjoy what Christmas used to mean to her—love.

DEA agent, John Smith knows the significance of December fifteenth to Brenda, but when the head of the Nuevo Cartel escapes federal prison he’s forced to let her face the day without him, but not quite alone.

Can Daisy, a golden Labrador puppy, a huge sale on decorations at the hardware store, and a gift from her aunt restore her love of Christmas?

Excerpt:

December 2013

The weather forecast for the Western Washington area, specifically North Seattle, predicted a good five-to-six inches of snow. Brenda Houser watched the flakes float like cotton balls from the sky as she dipped a tortilla chip into a bowl of thick and chunky salsa and popped the morsel into her mouth.

Her boss, Corny Myers, tapped her pencil on Brenda’s reception desk to the beat of The Little Drummer Boy, which streamed from the Green Hornet Investigations Bose speakers.

“Hey, Brenda. I have bad eating habits but I’ve never started the day with chips and salsa. What’s up?” Corny asked.

“You know how I feel about all the holiday hoopla. I’d rather stick my head in the sand and pull it back out in January.”

“Do you really think Mexican food is going to make you feel better?”

“Probably not, but a couple margaritas might help.”

Will they find room in their hearts to take him in? And can this Christmas season weave some special magic for the two of them?

Book Excerpt:

“I’m happy this wasn’t your worst date ever, because I had a great time.” He lifted her chin with the tips of his finger. Slowly he lowered his head until she thought she would die of anticipation. He clamped his hands to her waist and gazed into her eyes. “You’re so beautiful…” There was depth and sincerity in the tone of his voice. She felt special. Desired. He dropped his head and kissed her.

Gentle at first and then deep. She couldn’t breathe. He’d sucked all the air from her lungs, but there was no way she wanted him to stop. As she brushed his firm lips to hers, she relished the feel of her blood simmering in her veins. Par slid his fingers through her long hair to cradle and position her head to kiss her even more thoroughly.

His lips pulled away from hers and he stepped back. She reached for the roof of the car to steady herself. Oh. My. God… could this man kiss.

“Not bad for a first date,” he whispered and then kissed her gently again.

Okay… so it was a date. After that kiss it turned into an ‘official date’ and she had no regrets at all.

But, Christmas has a way of changing what we thought we wanted… especially when Santa and an adorable four-legged ‘elf’ are involved.

“What’s this?” Hanna asked, as she ran a hand over the grocery bag wrapping paper. Julian took her coat and hung it by the door so she could follow Gabe into the living room.

“Daddy saw this in a store window and said that we had to get it for you. Open it!” Gabe said. “I wrapped it myself,” he added proudly.

“But it’s not Christmas.”

“No. This is a before Christmas gift. You have to open it now.”

She pulled off a half-pound of scotch tape and finally the paper fell away. Hanna stared at the gift in disbelief. “A Christmas sock… with my name on it.”

Julian came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist. “You told me that you’d never had a Christmas stocking of your own when you were growing up. Gabe knew  Santa wouldn’t know where you were if you didn’t have you sock hung somewhere.” He winked. “So you needed it.”

“You can take it to your home or you can hang it here!” Gabe shouted almost tripping over Cody.

Guest Blog: Julie Kavanagh author of The Bodyguard

The Bodyguard

We are excited to announce that Julie Kavanagh’s newest release, The Bodyguard, is free today on Amazon! Make sure to get your copy!

I love writing romances even if I never find out the end until I write them. My stories always start and end with my characters especially someone like Gwen Lancaster.

She is stubborn, arrogant and tried to run the story her way. The male lead had to be more determined, more stubborn and able to keep the feisty Ms Lancaster in a safe place. Roberto Denning – tall, drop-dead gorgeous and equally determined to get his own way, fits the bill to perfection. I wanted him to be a treat to look at with a good heart he can’t hide for long.

Gwen has a secret she tries to conceal but Rob, an experienced security agent, spots the fear in our heroine’s eyes and decides to save the lovely Ms Lancaster from whatever frightens her.

Gwen has been hurt in the past and is resolute that it won’t happen again until she starts to see her condescending bodyguard in a different light.  Can the romance writer find true love or will it remain a fantasy between the pages of her novels?

Excerpt from The Bodyguard:

“I need your help.” Gwen stepped closer, drawn by the sound of Denning’ voice although she couldn’t see him as he ducked back into one of the rooms. “Oooh, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know…” She paused, only feet from the half-naked man. He stood, clad merely in a towel, his chest glistening and still wet, his hair an attractive mess about his face.

“I’m sure neither of us will implode at the sight of my chest. You wanted my help?” His eyes took in the long scarlet dress she wore and how she held it to her chest.

“I can’t reach…” Gwen spun, feeling awkward under Denning’s scrutiny. No matter how she’d tried, she couldn’t hold the dress up, and fasten the zipper at the same time. This beautiful gown was too tight to be fastened from the front and pulled around. It was his fault she needed his aid. If he hadn’t given Sarah the weekend off….

She could feel his eyes on the skin of her back revealed by her inability to pull the zipper up.

“Yes,” he said. “I can see your problem.”

Gwen waited, but the zipper remained untouched.

“Are you going to do it?” she snarled when he still hadn’t moved.

“Would you like me to?”

“I wouldn’t be standing here like an idiot if I didn’t,” she snapped, turning her head to catch the silly grin on his face.

“Say please.”

“What?”

“If you want someone to do something for you, you should say please.” His smile revealed straight white teeth as a look of mischief blossomed in his eyes.

“Are you serious?” Gwen gasped, unable to believe the audacity of this man.

“Completely serious,” Denning grinned back.

“Mr. totally infuriating Denning, would you PLEASE fasten my zipper for me?”

“I’d love to.”

Gwen felt the cool pressure of his fingers on the skin covering the bumps of her spine before he moved to secure the zipper. Goose bumps formed on her skin at the unexpected contact and a shiver traveled upwards as she anticipated his touch.

Their first meeting –

Valerie’s head lightened in the hazy dream-like sensation that overtook her.  She closed her eyes in an effort to steady herself and swallowed the discomfort of foreknowledge away.  I have never swooned at the sight of a man afore, and I shall not begin now.  Then she returned her attention to her visitor again.  Whatever bothers me could not be this stranger at my door.

“May I help ye, Sir?” she asked in tremulous query of his call at her home.  Valerie watched as the man at her door looked about himself, into her home, and back again to her face.  He appeared as curious as she about the reason he stood there.  She took a quick peek around him, but saw no children anywhere.  The chill of sudden breathlessness swooped up through her throat.

What has he done with the children?

Blurb: Ten years ago, Jarrett Brandt left home and abandoned everyone of importance. After a hard reality check, the irresponsible young man matured into a ballsy DEA agent with a kickass Harley Davidson and a million-dollar bounty on his head. Ordered by his superior officer to take refuge at a safe house just days before Christmas, he headed back home to Washington State, instead, to make peace with his deceased brother’s memory.

Marissa Reinn Brandt never expected to see Jarrett again. Best friends since childhood and lovers as teenagers, immaturity, over-demanding parents and illicit drugs ripped them apart. Now a successful chef at a posh restaurant, the young widow and her son offered Jarrett a place to stay for the holiday. Even though she expected nothing from her former lover—the twin brother of the man she married—fate intervened.

As Jarrett and Marissa rekindled the flames of love and lust that once bound them together, an enemy from his past and a trusted mentor from his present vied their time in the snowy dark and threatened to destroy everyone he held dear. Needing a Christmas miracle to save his family, Jarrett needed the love of a good woman to save his battered heart. His second chance with Marissa meant the world to him and nothing, no one, would stand in his way of cherishing her for all time.

 Excerpt:

Jarrett seethed. Ready to hit the highway on his Road King Classic and find a biker bar where he could bloody his knuckles, he turned and headed back toward the caretaker’s station. He reached the cracked sidewalk just as someone called out his name. His heart somersaulted as he flipped around. He’d know that voice anywhere. The woman who haunted his dreams skidded down the small hill in clunky shoes with damp auburn hair cascading around her shoulders. He expected her to stop a few feet from him just as his parents did but she jumped into his arms, instead, and knocked him back a few steps. She wrapped her arms around him. Her sweet scent filled his nostrils. He buried one hand in her curly hair and pressed her close to his chest with the other.

This one moment made the trip worth it.

“Marissa,” he breathed her name like a talisman. God, it felt so right to hold her again. She fit against him perfectly. Just a few inches under six feet, while he was a few inches over, their bodies meshed like a work of art. He should have married this woman, fathered children with her and lived his life to make her happy. Instead, he chose something just as intoxicating, just as beautiful to his ignorant mind, and abandoned her on the curb outside his family’s home. More than anything, he regretted that he’d left her behind.

New Release Spotlight: Red Soles at Night Christmas Delight

May I suggest a recipe for the perfect Christmas when all you’ve got is an empty heart? Christmas should be a joyous time, but all too often people are alone when loved ones are no longer near. This being the case for my heroine in Red Soles at Night, Christmas Delight, I chose three of my favorite ingredients to help fill the void in her life: lifelong friends, fabulous shoes, and the sparkling hope of a new beginning.
Red Soles at Night Christmas Delight

I’m a firm believer in the heart-healing power of all three ingredients. The first, friends, should be those who spring from that wonderful time before the advent of interest in the opposite sex. They know your foibles; you’ve shared uninhibited laughter, and been together through all of those adventures in mud and make-believe.  The second ingredient, well, that goes without saying. I mean, what malady of the heart would a great pair of Louboutin’s not cure??? And the third, and arguably most important ingredient – the resurgent hope that comes when a very special someone unexpectedly enters your life.

What do all three ingredients have in common? From whichever well they spring (Friendship? Lust? Hope?), their common ingredient is love. And as we know, love conquers all, even the prospect of a sad and lonely Christmas.

May you know all three ingredients this year, and . . . Merry Christmas.
