New Release: Halloween Love Fortune

by Mindy Hardwick

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. Kids dress in costumes, jack-o-lanterns glow on porches and mischief is in the air. But, Halloween wasn’t always a holiday designed to frighten and scare. Halloween used to be a romantic holiday. Before the 1930′s, Halloween parties were for single people to find love and for matchmaking. Between 1875-1935, Halloween parties included: masquerade parties, barn dances, progressive dinners and society balls. The parties involved kissing games, mistletoe and fortune telling.

The idea for my sweet contemporary romance novella, HALLOWEEN LOVE FORTUNE, evolved from this romantic history of Halloween.

Here are some ways of foretelling your future spouse on Halloween night:Halloween Love Fortune

  • Look      into a well or spring by lantern night on Halloween and see the face of      your future husband and children.
  • Melt      lead and pour it into cold water. The shape represents a future husband’s      trade
  • Walk      into your bedroom backwards at midnight on Halloween. Look over your left      shoulder and see your future husband.
  • Catch      a snail on Halloween and keep it in a flat dish. In the morning, the first      initial of your future spouse’s name will be written in the slimy trail.

HALLOWEEN LOVE FORTUNE is a story based on Halloween romance and party games. Jenny Piercy is excited to help with the Elmheart Hotel’s old-fashion Halloween barn party and enjoys nothing more than working side-by-side long-time friend, Zach Cullver.  But, it’s going to take more than a fortune teller’s prediction of true love to bring these two together. Can a coffin and a mummy costume show Zach and Jenny the best romance is found in long-time friendship in this sweet, contemporary romance novella?

HALLOWEEN LOVE FORTUNE is the second story in the Elmheart Hotel series. You can find out more about the series here.

I hope on this Halloween night, you find a little romantic magic among the ghosts and goblins.

Happy Halloween!

Excerpt:

Jenny shook her head. “I’m sorry. I just don’t think I’ve carved pumpkins since…” Jenny’s voice broke off suddenly.

Zach’s heart ached for her. Softly, he squeezed her hand. Zach wanted to tell Jenny nothing would ever harm her again. He knew her childhood hadn’t been easy. She shouldered a lot of responsibility after her mom died.  It hurt Jenny when her younger sister, Allison, married right out of high school, moved to San Diego and didn’t invite Jenny to visit. Jenny had seen more than her share of heartache. Zach wanted nothing more than to take it all away and make sure she never hurt again. “We can do this together,” Zach said, his voice husky with emotion. “Go ahead and cut the top. We’ll scoop the seeds out first.”

Very carefully, Jenny moved the knife into the hard pumpkin shell where it promptly stuck.

“Here.” Zach leaned around Jenny. He wrapped his right hand around the knife. “I don’t think this is the best knife for carving,” he whispered against her cheek. “But let’s go with it. Maybe it will work with the strength of the two of us.” Zach pressed the knife into the pumpkin shell. Slowly, he carved a circle in the top of the pumpkin.

New Release Spotlight: Terminus X (Nelson's Plight) by Shane Ward

My Journey in Writing

by Shane WardTERMINUS X (Nelson's Plight)

There are many books, people and classes out there that tell you how to write a book and how to do it. Some of these ideas are just perfect for some people, others, are no so good. But for me, I have grown to understand that writing a book comes from the heart and it requires a lot of determination and the will to complete. Don’t get me wrong. Almost everybody wants to write a book, half try and then give up before the first chapter is completed, but writing a book is a long-term commitment and it has the power to change people’s lives. So who and what you put in that world could influence them for the rest of their life. A writers mind is power and that power can have rewarding feedback and  most important tool a writer could have in his toolbox is word of mouth. Once someone likes your story, they will spread the word for you.

When I first started Terminus X I wanted a breathtaking story that would  amaze readers and offer a bite sized medium in which to deliver this tale. It was originally a short story intended for an anthology, but the idea became so big and complex, I decided to put it into a series. I was also following M. Leon Smith’s series that it encouraged me to make a series of my own.

Terminus X is set in a world devastated by natural disaster, and the downfall of human civilization. In this story I wanted to add some old age faction of King and country combined with a futuristic sky world of Science Fiction and adventure. With beautiful woman, Kings, murder, mayhem and fast vehicles, I believe I have created a story that rides along with Star Wars and epic series that blows away the imagination.

And like most important projects, I believe its always very important to finished what I have started and with the world facing hardships in this current era, I believe my stories can make the reader look up and see the world in a new light. So if you have the time, download this amazing series and experience yourself the wonders of a mixed themed story that stretches the bounds of reality and fiction.

Terminus X Part 2About Shane Ward:

Shane Ward used to spend most of his time dreaming up stories and tales that deserve to be out there for all to read. He’s been writing for many years now, his first project was fan fiction and he can still be found writing stories for his favourite TV shows, but he has now moved on to telling personal stories and attempting to become a professional novelist.

He lives in a small bucolic town on the outskirts of London where he uses his spare time to write and develop stories. He has had some success and is now attempting a novel.

His chosen genre is Science Fiction and he had written many stories in this field. His preferred storytelling is similar to that of David Baldacci and John Gresham with a hit of Kevin J Anderson.

His story offers adventure, with a cocktail of mystery and crime. He creates creatures from the depths of his mind and describes scenes in detail that will inspire your imagination, but will not blanket the reader in a sea of words. His stories are quick, easy to read and with minimum jargon. Shane’s goal is to tell a story, not impress with his writing technique.

Code is easy. People are unpredictable.

What Reviewers are saying:

“Fun fast-paced adventure with interesting characters and attentive detail in location. Looking forward to seeing what is next for Angel!”

“Fabulous first novel! I couldn’t believe this was a debut author. This book reminded me so much of Lee Child!”

Where you can find Angel’s Code:

Blurb:

Danny Murray is a restless young Londoner.  Bored with his studies as a web designer, he longs for something new and exciting.  He attracts the attention of an enigmatic American hacker who goes by the screen name “The Fallen Angel.”  Angel agrees to train him, as long as he becomes a member her team.  Oliver Murray, Senior Investigating Officer for London’s Metropolitan Police’s Cyber Crime Division, and Danny’s older brother, has different plans for his troublesome brother.  But when Oliver is abducted, it comes down to Danny and the illegal skills he’s learned to save him.

Excerpt:

When she took this assignment, it was recommended that she wipe her slate clean.  Faking her death was a good decision, going to her own funeral was not.  On that January day, Angel had kept a respectful distance from her grieving family.  Her mother, as expected, was a blubbering mess; her puffy face wet with tears and her make-up long cried away.  Angel’s father though, is what shook her.  He held his wife tight as she flinched every time the firing squad squeezed off another round of the twenty-one gun salute, his glance never wavering from the American flag draped over the empty coffin.  Through the binoculars, Angel could see the grief on his stoic face and the single tear that escaped from his gray eyes.  When the Master-At-Arms presented the flag to her parents, her mother began to wail. “My Angel!”

Planning a Joint Blog Tour

by Kara Leigh Miller & Sharon Kleve

With the advent and popularity of ebooks, traditional marketing and book tours/signings aren’t as effective as they used to be. You don’t always have a physical book to carry around to do book signings. So, what do you do to promote your book and get it in the hands of readers?

You do a blog tour! Sweet n Steamy Blog Tour

Planning a blog tour is both exciting and exhausting. It’s a lot of work, but it is well worth it. However, working in conjunction with someone else to celebrate the release of two books is way more fun! This is exactly what we’ve done.

How, you ask? Here are the steps we took to plan and organize our Sweet ‘n Steamy Blog Tour.

  1. Get organized before you start any planning. This step is crucial!
    1. Start a spreadsheet where you can keep track of all the stops you schedule. You don’t want to forget about a stop or forget to send materials to a blogger after they’ve been kind enough to host you. We have a spreadsheet we’re using via Google docs. Goggle docs is convenient because you can access it from any computer, without sending a word document back and to keep the other author up-to-date. It includes: blog name, blog link, blogger’s name, blogger’s email address, date of scheduled stop, type of post (guest post (topic), interview, spotlight, review), and date the materials were sent to the blogger. So, at a quick glance, we can see what dates we have left to fill and which bloggers we still need to send stuff to.
    2. Pick dates that you want your blog tour to run. Be sure it coincides with your book release. Starting the day your book is released or the day after is a good choice. For example, our Sweet ‘n Steamy tour is running from 9/15 – 10/16, so we know we have to try and fill as many dates within that time frame as possible. One blog stop per day is good. It’s better if you can schedule 2 or 3 per day, for maximum exposure.
    3. No blog tour is complete without a giveaway of some sort. Determine what prizes you’d like to giveaway and make a list of them.
    4. Create a standard form email that you can copy and paste when contacting bloggers. Trust us, you don’t want to have to retype the same email over and over again. Be sure to include your name; pertinent blog tour information such as dates, tour name, etc.; the giveaway and what prizes you’re offering; the book(s) information; and what kind of promotion you’re looking to do: book spotlight, guest post, interview, or a review request. Also, be sure to personalize it for each blog you send it to.
  2. Start contacting bloggers. In our case, we both contacted our personal friends/bloggers first. They are your best resource. If you’re a new author and don’t have any blogging contacts yet, don’t worry. Start by going to your publisher’s author loop and ask your fellow authors to help you out and participate in your blog tour.
  3. Find blogs that fit your genre of book. For example, you don’t want to ask blogs that cater to a young adult audience to help promote your erotica or adult romance book. It’s very easy to Google “romance blogs” or “paranormal blogs” or “young adult blogs.” Be prepared. There will be a LOT of options.
  4. Systematically start going through the search results. Visit each individual blog and read their guest post/review request requirements. Then send them an email asking to be a guest on their blog. Some blogs will post an email address that you send requests to. Others will have a form right there on the website to fill out. This is where your pre-written form letter will come in handy. Also, be sure to update your spreadsheet each time you schedule a stop.
  5. Repeat step 3 until you’re exhausted or you’ve run out of blogs to visit.
  6. This is optional: create a new page on your personal blog that will stay there until the end of the tour. This allows people to see the complete tour schedule and follow it if they want. It’s also added promotion for random visitors who may not know you have a blog tour going on. You can see a sample one here: http://www.karaleighmiller.com/p/jilted-blog-tour.html .
  7. Most importantly…Have fun and sell some books!

Book Blurb:

Amy and Brett have been friends since they were kids; and their friendship has withstood the test of time. But can it withstand Brett’s fiancée, Vanessa?

Brett Hudson has often wondered what it would be like to be more than Amy’s friend, but when he’s chosen as the newest professional dancer on Dancing with the Stars, he meets Vanessa, one of the shows costume designers and it’s a whirlwind romance that ends in a wedding proposal. As the big day draws closer, Brett begins to think that marrying Vanessa might be a bad idea. She wants him to give up Amy. Completely. Will he give up his best friend for the woman he’s supposed to marry?

Amy King is heartbroken to learn that Brett is marrying another woman. But, when Brett is jilted at the altar, he begs Amy to go on his honeymoon with him. A week on a tropical island with her best friend, the man she’s fantasized about for years is a dream come true for Amy. But when Brett suggests crossing the line from friends to lovers, Amy is reluctant. Will she risk years of friendship for one night of passion?

Excerpt:

“It’s because you go for the wrong type of guy,” Brett said matter-of-factly, pouring a third shot down his throat. “Those muscle bound jocks are all bark and no bite. They look good on the outside, but they’re a mess on the inside.”

Amy threw a piece of ice at him and laughed. “And the goody two shoes, school teacher types you date are much better?”

“Nope.” He grinned. “Which is why we’re both still single.”

She sighed. “Yeah, so much for my dream of having kids.”

“You’re young. I’m sure you’ll find someone.” He drank his last shot and chased it with his beer.

“I’m thirty, Brett. By the time I find a man, date him, and get married, I’ll be an old hag with no viable eggs.”

The thought of Amy finding a man to marry and have kids with didn’t sit well with him. He couldn’t stomach the thought of losing her. “I’ll tell you what.” He leaned across the table and pointed at her. “Three years from now, if neither of us are married, I’ll marry you and give you as many babies as you want.” Brett’s words were slurred. Yup. He was definitely drunk. He wouldn’t have made that proposition otherwise.

“Yeah right.” Amy rolled her eyes. “You and me? That would be like fucking my brother. Thanks, but no thanks.”

He flinched at her words. “You think of me as your brother?” That bothered him a lot more than it should, especially considering he’d never once thought of her as a sister.

She shrugged. “We’re best friends. How else would I think of you?” Amy glanced away, and then set her gaze on him again. “Why? How do you think of me?”

Oh shit! He hadn’t expected the conversation to backfire on him like that. What was he supposed to tell her? That he thought of her as a best friend that he wanted to fuck? No, he definitely couldn’t tell her that. “As a friend, I guess. I don’t know. It’s not like I sit around and think about how I should think of you. You’re Amy.”

“And you’re drunk.”

“Maybe a little.” He grinned. “So, do we have a deal or what?”

Halos Wish1Book Title: Halo’s Wish

Author: Sharon Kleve

Publisher: Books to Go Now

Genre: Sweet Contemporary Christmas Romance

Release Date: 9.15.2013

Length: 11K

Heat Rating: Sweet

Book Blurb:

Halo Ann Carlyle wishes for a home, family, and a boat-load of pets. What she gets is a bruised hip, a lump on the head, a broken ankle, and her new yellow Honda Civic is demolished.

Rich McFarland, a sexy veterinarian, keeps showing up in the most unexpected places, promising everything she’s ever wanted.

Halo believes she only has time to pursue her career as a pet detective and must ignore her growing attraction to achieve her dreams.

Will Halo trust her heart, and find a way to get both for Christmas?

Excerpt:

She’d just placed another call through to Pemsky’s office, which went straight to his voicemail, when the office door opened. Halo smiled and looked up into dreamy, gold-flecked green eyes, short sandy brown hair, a slight cleft chin, and full lips set in a hard line. Even with the stern look he had on his face, my hormones jumped into overdrive.

Mr. Dreamy cleared his throat—she must’ve been staring. In her most professional voice she said, “Good morning. How may I help you?”

He removed a piece of paper from his shirt pocket and unfolded the sheet.

“I was parked in front of the Beacon Hill Ale House and my driver’s side mirror was sideswiped by one of Pemsky’s Security’s SUV’s Friday night.”

Halo loved the Beacon Hill Ale House. Every Saturday night the Ale House allowed local bands to jam together. That’s where she’d met her last loser boyfriend. She’d had a lot of loser boyfriends. She’s currently on a hiatus from dating, but she wouldn’t mind jumping back into the dating game for this dream-boat.

He handed her the piece of paper.

“I wasn’t able to get a look at the driver, but I got the license plate number of the vehicle that hit my car and drove away.”

He emphasized the last part.

“I’m very sorry about your car. I’m sure Mr. Pemsky will be happy to cover the damage.” Halo checked the company log and Pemsky’s name popped up as the driver—she gulped.

Author Bio:

Sharon Kleve was born and raised in Washington and currently lives on the Olympic Peninsula with her husband.

Sharon is a writer of paranormal and contemporary romance. She loves romance. She loves reading romance, living romance, and especially loves writing about romance. She gets no greater feeling than watching her characters come alive in each other’s arms. Most of all, she loves giving her characters the happily ever after they deserve—with a few bumps and bruises along the way.

One of her favorite things to do is picking up a new book and sinking into the story, immersing herself in the emotions between the characters. She hopes to inspire her readers the same way her favorite authors have inspired her.

When not writing, she can usually be found either curled up in her recliner with her cat and a good book, or in the kitchen baking sourdough bread or bagels.

Top 10 Rules for Editing Fiction

by Danica Winters

So you’ve finished the mammoth task of writing your novel…

Maybe this is your first, your fifth, or your tenth book–you still find yourself at the same place asking, “What’s next?”Self-Editing Rules

Before you ever consider submitting your manuscript to BTGN, you need to take a look over your draft and check for these ten simple rules which will make your submission stronger–and more likely to be picked up:

10. After you finish the first draft, get a little distance from your manuscript. Some people need a month, some a week, and some simply need to pour themselves into another project for a few days. Whatever your system is, make sure you can see your work through an objective set of eyes. What does that mean? Simple. Leave it long enough to forget those little details you loved while writing the book. You need to read it as if you’ve never seen the book before.

9. Cut all extra words. IE So you’re working under the cloud of a word count….  We often ask for stories that are between eight thousand and seventy-five thousand (or more) words. We give you a large range so you can make the story you are writing the strongest it can be without the rigidity of trying to fit it into a set amount of words (for example 60-65k words). We’d rather have a short, well-paced, and well written manuscript instead of getting a manuscript that has whole paragraphs of ‘fluff’.

More simply: If you are reading and you see a paragraph/page/line/word that does nothing to further the story Cut It.

8. Get your work in front of beta-readers. What are beta-readers? These are the incredible friends/poor saps who will read your book and tell you their HONEST OPINION. This can be ugly, but it’s a part of the process. Think of it as an early warning system–a system that can alert you to problems before your story goes to an editor’s desk.

As authors, we often fall in love with our characters–Why not? We spend all day everyday with them until a book is completed. However, when we are so close to these characters it is easy to lose our objectivity (I know, I like this word). Our irresistible hero may strike the wrong chords with others, but before you submit you need to know what other people think of your book so you can make the necessary changes.

7. Don’t trust Spell Check. I read this on most top ten rules for writers lists, but I don’ t think it can be stressed enough–Just because spell check says something doesn’t mean a.) it’s correct or b.) it knows the word you intended. All authors are logophiles, but that doesn’t mean we are perfect spellers. So make sure you read your draft from first to last word. On a side note, you want to do this at every stage of publication. It doesn’t matter if you are at the level of conceptual edits with your publisher or if you are doing the final line-edit–read every word. Mistakes happen.

6. Cut most adverbs.  Read this sentence: “Martha was nervously watching the crowd.”

This is a weak sentence.

We don’t get to experience any of the emotions you are trying to convey for your character. You are spoon-feeding/telling your reader what they should feel instead of letting them ‘feel’ by showing the scene.

You could cut the offending -ly adverb and it would do, but instead of simply cutting you can take the sentence and use it to your advantage.

For Example: “Martha’s gaze shifted from one person to the next. Each time she blinked, the crowd seemed to grow nearer, almost smothering her with their heated breath.”

Sure it’s longer, but you can get a better sense of what she is feeling in addition to getting to know more about her character.

5. Avoid Head-hopping. If you are writing from your hero’s POV (point of view) stick with it for at least a few paragraphs before switching to another POV. If you do switch between POVs make sure your shift is marked with asterisks so your reader knows that you are shifting. There are a few authors who get away with frequent, unmarked shifting POVs, but if you read their reviews you will find comments like “I got confused when…” and “The story was great, but…”

4. (Continuing from above) Try to tell the scene from the POV of the character that has the most at stake (emotionally). We understand that this can’t always be done (in short stories it is often best to stick to one POV). So make sure you are telling your story from the right POV.

3. Make sure your characters have strong character arcs. If you character is X at the beginning of the story they need to be Y at the end, they can’t still be X. In fact, if you take your character at the end of the book and drop them into the first scene, it shouldn’t work. If it does, you don’t have a strong enough character arc.

2. Make sure each scene has a Goal. Finding out information should rarely be the goal of scene. If it is, you need to have a strong conflict and motivation behind the scene. It can’t be a simple diner (Why is it always in a diner?) scene in which two people have a conversation. This is BORING.

1. Read each scene while asking: Is the Conflict here strong enough?  Quite often we see manuscripts that have conflict, but they are simple and simple to resolve. This makes for a simple, uncomplicated, and BORING book. Make sure each scene has a Strong conflict and that those conflicts escalate until the ‘black moment.’ We want to wonder how your characters can possibly come out of the situation.

While this is a great list of ten edit tricks, we could make this a list of one hundred tricks. However, these are the most common (and avoidable) mistakes made by authors (new and old). SO before you hit SEND, take the time to go through your manuscript. When it’s ready, we would love to take a look! Check out our Submission Guidelines to learn how.
